Islip Art Museum Collection Insights: Regina Gilligan, New Work. Janet Goleas, curator.
If it were possible to distill a single narrative in the art of Regina Gilligan it would speak of cultural atonement. As Gilligan weaves her way through our global tapestry, she links arms with a long line of artists – Goya, Joseph Beuys, Nancy Spero, Kathe Kollwitz and so many others – who have believed in the redemptive power of art, the need to identify a social conscience and the potential of art to heal. Within this context, Gilligan’s art is one of playful spirituality, paradox and irony.
